DR. NETTLE: My father’s a family physician and I always wanted to be a doctor. When I started doing my medical degree I quickly realized I wanted to do surgery. As soon as I knew I wanted to do surgery I sought the most entertaining and exciting area of surgery, and that was plastic surgery. That was the area that was really coming up with new inventions, new scientific ideas, and brand new ways of doing things. I trained in plastic surgery here in Australia. And following that I went to the US. And I was in the US three years and I stayed in Miami and Houston and New York.
I had some incredible training experiences in the US. It is a long and arduous training to become a plastic surgeon specializing in cosmetic plastic surgery. Some of the teachers I had in the US are world leaders in their field. They instilled in me a love for this plastic surgery. I’ve translated that now into training younger plastic surgeons. And each week I have at my operating - - young plastic surgeons who are learning my skills which I’ve learned from the giants of plastic surgery.
Some of the things that I really love about plastic surgery and probably the thing I like the most is the potential that plastic surgery, and in particular cosmetic plastic surgery, has to change people’s attitudes. For one reason or other people can be saddled with a physical issue that they simply don’t like. It simply is not - - with them. It’s not right for them. And by a fairly seeking change or simple rejuvenation procedures it can make an enormous difference in that person’s like and their outlook towards life.
I love it when people come in several weeks to several months after a procedure, particularly for post-operative photographs. We can see these enormous, yet fairly subtle, changes. I think it’s important to keep this real. We’ve all seen cases where people have had operations that don’t look real. And that’s one of people’s greatest fears. It will make them look not like themselves or unnatural. And there are methods that we can use to totally avoid those sorts of issues.
